Capturing Modern Britain: Documentary Photography by nath

Nath is a UK based documentary photographer. His work focuses on modern day Britain, it’s people, its subcultures and the everyday objects that catch his eye.

Nath photographs the people, places and things he likes. He hopes you like them too. He’s interested in everyday objects and places, British subcultures and urban environments. He photographs the things that stir memories in him or elicit an emotional response in others. Sometimes it’s about photographing things before they disappear or fade away and sometimes it’s simply about photographing the things that make him smile.

FAQs

what camera do you use?

I use a whole bunch really but that’s just because I think they’re beautiful objects. I do shoot film quite a lot (35mm & medium format) but I’m not a film snob and I’ll happily shoot digital as well (my most popular print was actually taken on an old iPhone). If I had to choose one camera though (you know in a burning house scenario). It would be my Olympus OM1. I don’t use it as often as I should but I love that camera the most.

if you could own one photograph?

I’ve never forgotten discovering the photobook “The Americans” by Robert Frank (tip - if you’ve never seen it, go and find a copy now!). Frank was an outsider who travelled around America in the 1950’s. He became hugely successful following the book’s publication but was relatively unknown prior to it. Anyway, his photograph View from Hotel Window -Butte, Montana, had a huge impact on me. So if I could own one photograph it would be that one.

who are your influences?

There are loads and I’m always finding new ones. Martin Parr, William Eggleston, and Stephen Shore are all big influences. Jane Bown for her portrait work. Tish Murtha for her eye and compassion. I also love the work of Paul Graham and John Myers. I’m also really influenced by the films of Shane Meadows (particularly ‘This is England’) as well as by the paintings of George Shaw. Music is a big influence too and I often listen to it when I’m out taking photographs.

do you sell prints?

Yes, I’ve teamed up with the wonderful people at Creativehub for prints. The whole process is automated and once an order is made they print it, check it and ship it out to you ASAP (most print orders are despatched within 2 workings days). If there’s a particular photograph of mine that you’re interested in but isn’t listed as a print just drop me a line and I’ll see what I can do for you. My prints start at £35 plus P+P.

what is your style of photography?

Not sure really. I photograph the locations, scenes, objects and people that really interest me. I think I take pictures when I feel an emotional or nostalgic connection with what I’m seeing. They often remind me of aspects of my own childhood, or music or films that I’ve seen. I’m based in the North of England so lots of my photography takes place there but I’m always keen to visit places and locations I’ve never been to before.

any advice or tips for new photographers?

The best piece of advice I ever received was to get a cheap 50mm lens and to learn how to use it. It’s advice that I’ve passed on countless times to others. Also don’t worry about having to own new or expensive cameras. Some of the best photographs you’ll ever see were taken on cameras that would be regarded as obsolete now. I also think that Don McCullin was onto something when he said “Photography for me is not looking, it's feeling. If you can't feel what you're looking at, then you're never going to make other people feel anything when they look at your pictures”.
